Why does the TrueGrid® license manager running on a PC with WINDOWS stop working when the network is connected or disconnected?

Answer: The TrueGrid® license manager on WINDOWS prefers to use the machine ID from a dongle or hardware key supplied by XYZ Scientific Applications. When this is not available, it chooses the ethernet board identification number. If this is not available, it uses some other hardware.

Newer versions of WINDOWS will disconnect the ethernet card automatically when the network is disconnected. This is considered a plug-n-play feature. It makes it possible to have one ethernet card in a laptop computer and second ethernet card that is within a docking station. This is a problem for the TrueGrid® license manager.

There is a way to avoid this by disabling the plug-n-play feature in WINDOWS. This is dangerous and is not recommended.

The best way to avoid problems is to authorize the TrueGrid® license manager in the configuration in which TrueGrid® will be used. So if the machine is typically on the network when TrueGrid® is being used, then the license manager should be authorized in that configuration.

An alternative is to use a dongle or hardware key. However, a dongle costs extra and requires setup and shipping.
